I discovered with astonishment that one of the “instants” of alleged recognition of the individual who circulates in places of consumption, seeking some confirmation of his existence there, resides in the messages hidden in the tangles of cash tickets. When we consume, sometimes a pseudo-humanizing message is sent to us, as if we were finally seen, an injunction, a kind word, a simulacrum of address from one human to another, in a situation that is entirely of the order of non-place.
Over the course of an entire year, I collected these cash tickets from every place I went and where I consumed a product or service. The tickets pasted into notebooks, in chronological order, had all information erased except these minimal references to an impersonal personality. The terms were then re-transcribed on the sheet and some were circled in red. The design formed by these interventions was replicated on paper and then in monotype on paper and on a reel of shopping tickets.
